The father of modern African nationalism in Guinea-Bissau and the Cape Verde Islands and the leader of Guinea-Bissau’s independence movement, which was successful in 1975 Amílcar Lopes Cabral, born in Bafatá, Portuguese Guinea [now Guinea-Bissau], was an agronomist, nationalist leader, and founder and secretary-general of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (Partido Africano da Independência da Guiné e Cabo Verde; PAIGC), who helped lead Guinea-Bissau to independence. He is remembered as one of the most important revolutionary thinkers of the 20th century.
